Scott's View: President Honors Four Vietnam Veterans With the Medal of Honor

Scott Higgins

I was overjoyed to see four fellow Vietnam War Veterans who served in the U.S. Army receive the Medal of Honor last week. Long overdue recognition.

President Joe Biden awarded the Medal of Honor to Spc. 5 Dennis Fujii, Spc. 5 Dwight Birdwell, Maj. John Duffy and Staff Sgt. Edward Kaneshiro, who died in battle and received it posthumously.

"Today, we're setting the record straight. We're upgrading the awards of four soldiers who performed acts of incredible heroism during the Vietnam conflict," President Biden said during a White House ceremony. Each of the soldiers had their previous awards upgraded.

The living recipients went on to make great strides after service. Birdwell went on to serve as chief justice of the Cherokee Nation Supreme, Fujii was inducted into the  Army Aviation Museum’s Hall of Fame, and Duffy went on to be an accomplished author, publishing six books and even earning a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

We salute all of these heroes.
