VetFamily: Pink, Daughter of Vietnam Veteran and Military Supporter

“I have seen the rain. I've survived the pain. Oh I've been home 30 years or so, and I'm just stepping off of the plane...”
An Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War wrote these lyrics and sang them with his daughter - who happens to be pop icon Pink. In harmony, they recount a story of readjusting to civilian life through song.
Pink, who’s birth name is Alecia Beth Moore, is a three-time Grammy winner known for her raspy rebellious tone. In a career now spanning over two decades, she has released ten studio albums and sold over 100 million records worldwide. Beyond her incredible musical success, Pink is a passionate advocate for many causes, with a particularly deep commitment to her military family and supporting veterans.
How Did a Veteran Father Inspire Pink's Music?
Pink's bond with the military began with her late father, Staff Sergeant James Moore. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-1967 as a weapons maintenance technician. He sadly passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer, making his shared song with his daughter even more poignant.
“The part I really liked about the job I had in the service is that it gave me a lot of responsibility at an early age, 18 to be exact, where I was loading actual nuclear weapons that were live and real. It made you grow up very quickly,” he once wrote on TogetherWeServed.com. He penned the song “I Have Seen the Rain” while serving and often played it for his daughter as she grew up. It was the first song she learned to harmonize to.

The military connection continues with her brother, Jason Moore, who has since concluded his extensive career as an officer in the Air Force. He served as a member of the USAF Thunderbirds, a two-time Squadron Commander, Operations Officer, Aircraft Maintenance Unit Officer-in-Charge, a one year tour in Afghanistan and a two year tour at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He earned his commission from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2000.
When People Magazine asked Pink if she’d get in a plane with her brother, she replied, “Hell, no, he’d make me throw up!” with a laugh. But she added, “I am very proud of what he’s doing.”
While he largely avoided the spotlight, Jason had a viral moment of fame at Super Bowl 52. As Pink sang the national anthem, a photo captured him raising a proud salute, creating a powerful image of family and national pride.
How Has Pink Remained a Music Superstar for Decades?
Pink's journey to stardom began in the clubs of Philadelphia. She was part of the girl group Choice before signing her first solo record deal in 1995. Since then, her career has been marked by chart-topping hits and massive, sold-out world tours, including her recent and ongoing Summer Carnival tour. Her 2023 album TRUSTFALL was met with critical and commercial success, proving her lasting power in the music industry.
Her list of accolades is long, including being named Billboard's Pop Songs Artist of the Decade in 2009 and Woman of the Year in 2013, solidifying her status as a pop music titan.
Giving Back to the Veteran Community
In continued support of veterans, Pink and her husband run a nonprofit with proceeds going to the military community. “Good Ride” is a motorcycle charity ride that focuses on getting out on the open road with your friends and checking out new destinations - all for good causes. They work with “Infinite Hero,” a military charity, and proceeds from their Good Ride rallies go directly to helping veterans in need.
“My entire family is military and mostly veterans, and no one gives back like veterans do,” Pink said. “I’ve been doing car washes every weekend since I was 3 years old and a homeless dinner on Thanksgiving. The camaraderie is amazing. The support is amazing.
“At the end of the day, it’s not political. These are the people that are sacrificing time with their children and time with their families to defend freedom of speech and freedom in general and in their minds it’s always for the right reason.”
