November 2019: National Military Family Month, Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day

Scott's View

As the calendar turns to November, all eyes focus on National Military Family Month and special days that recognize those who served each year, including the Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day.

Today, I encourage you to read about the recent activities of former U.S. Senator and Navy Secretary Jim Webb. He’s a Vietnam veteran like me and a Marine Corp officer awarded the silver star, 2 bronze stars and 2 purple hearts. While it’s been more than 50 years since we both served in Vietnam, Jim continues to fight on behalf of his fellow veterans, and to help bring closure for those still impacted by the Vietnam War.

In  this remarkable story, Jim registered himself as next-of-kin to 81 unidentified South Vietnam soldiers who died in 1965, and he brought their remains to the United States to give them a proper military interment last week. Veterans Advantage was proud to support Jim in this effort.

The chief architect of the modern GI Bill, Jim embodies the concept of service before self. On this 100th Veterans Day, he reminds us of the Warrior Ethos that we must “Leave no man behind,”
