Scott's View: Remembering our Vietnam Veterans
This past week our nation recognized Vietnam Veterans Day to honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam Veterans. The official day, March 29 was designated by our nation only 4 years ago. It’s been a long time coming.
Throughout my career, I have strived to get the recognition those who served and sacrificed rightly deserved. In the turbulent ‘60’s and 70’s, and continuing into the 80’s, Americans confused the war with the warrior and, as a result, our Vietnam War service members were not properly honored. Sadly, most Americans wanted to forget what was then America’s longest war.
The New York City “Welcome Home'' Parade of 1985, 10 years after the end of the war, changed all that. It sparked a remarkable movement that spread across the country to thank those who serve. I was proud to co-chair the Commission that created and produced this ticker tape parade, the largest in the history of New York. Never again would we make the mistake of not saying “thank you for your service” to those who serve and have served.
Appreciating our veterans remains a core mission of Veterans Advantage, to ensure every veteran and their family feels appreciated. So, on behalf of Veterans Advantage, to all my fellow Vietnam veterans out there, "Welcome Home brother."
