Scott’s View: Double the Celebration: Honoring Our Army and Our Flag on June 14th!

Scott Higgins

Next Saturday, June 14th, is a date of profound significance in American history, as we have the unique opportunity to celebrate two cornerstone elements of our nation's identity: the U.S. Army Birthday and Flag Day. While often celebrated separately, their shared date serves as a powerful reminder of the intertwined history and enduring principles that define us.

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army, marking the birth of our nation's first branch of military service. For nearly 250 years, from the Revolutionary War to present-day operations, the U.S. Army has been at the forefront of every major conflict and humanitarian effort, embodying courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to duty.

Just two years later, on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the design of the first official United States flag. The stars and stripes, initially representing the thirteen colonies, have since grown to incorporate all fifty states, yet its core symbolism of unity, liberty, and justice remains unchanged. It is the banner under which our soldiers have fought, and the symbol we still proudly salute today, representing the very essence of American resilience and idealism.

So, as we approach next Saturday, let's take a moment to reflect on the immense significance of both the U.S. Army Birthday and Flag Day. Let's express our gratitude to the brave soldiers, past and present, who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nation. And let's renew our appreciation for the enduring symbol of our flag, a beacon of hope and freedom that continues to inspire generations.

Happy Army Birthday and Happy Flag Day!
