Veterans Advantage Announces Fourth-Annual Veterans Week NYC

Veterans Week NYC and WeSalute (Veterans Advantage)

Veterans Advantage today announced the fourth-annual Veterans Week NYC, endorsed by New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, honoring America's military veterans and personnel currently serving, with numerous events open to the public.

This year, Veterans Week NYC will include symposiums, seminars, facility tours, benefit galas, stand-up comedy shows, job fairs, concerts, parades and special discounts for veterans as listed on the event website, veteransweeknyc.org.

Prominent Veterans Week NYC events include the Veterans on Wall Street "VOWS" Annual Veteran Employment Symposium followed by The Bob Woodruff Foundation's Stand Up for Heroes at Madison Square Garden (Nov. 10 ); "America's Parade" – New York City's 96th Annual Veterans Day Parade, which boasts over 250 groups and 20,000 participants each year; an IMAX special screening of the newly-digitized HBO Emmy Award-winning documentary "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam" ( Nov. 11 ); and Heroes Meet Heroes at the New York Athletic Club, which brings together U.S. Olympians and combat-disabled veterans (Nov. 15).

Veterans Advantage CEO and founder Scott Higgins helped establish Veterans Week NYC with fellow Vietnam War veterans, as a response to the less-than-warm welcome they received during their own homecoming. Now, 50 years later, Higgins reflected on the importance — both personal and communal — of Veterans Week NYC, not only for troops and veterans themselves, but for the public at large.

"When I returned from the Vietnam War, no one was putting together a parade and no one was supporting veteran employment or throwing benefit concerts," Higgins said. "Today, Veterans Week NYC sends a strong and meaningful message to our U.S. military community, especially our veterans, that they are not forgotten. And, that never again will they be forgotten," he added.

Higgins also thanked his Veterans Advantage coalition partners Avis, Budget, and HBO for their continued sponsorship that helps make Veterans Week NYC possible. Veterans Advantage, members of its board of advisors and its partners have been actively involved with Veterans Week NYC since its founding in 2011.

"We founded Veterans Week NYC to be the grateful voice of the community that supports the best and finest who have served in the U.S. military, the 250,000 veterans who live in America's largest city. And we are thrilled to see it happening once again this year," said Gerry Byrne, vice chairman of the Penske Media Corporation and a Marine veteran who served in Vietnam.

Veterans participating in the celebration can also register for a free month of discounts with the VetRewards Card, the official card of Veterans Week NYC. The card will provide local and national discounts not only from the sponsors – Avis, Budget, and HBO – but also numerous other Veterans Advantage partners.
