The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced $16 million in grant funding awarded to 91 community-based organizations across the United States. The grants will expand access to adaptive sports and therapeutic recreation programs for disabled veterans and active-duty service members.

The funding supports a wide spectrum of athletic and leisure activities — ranging from archery, cycling, and wheelchair sports to equine therapy, hunting, and fishing. These community-led programs are structured to aid in physical rehabilitation, foster peer connection, and encourage lifelong health and wellness.

Fostering Health and Community Connection

The initiative focuses on broadening coverage in underserved regions while strengthening established local networks that serve disabled service members.

“These grants will help thousands of veterans across the country create meaningful connections through recreation and competition,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.

Program Impact and Participation

Adaptive sports grants enable non-profit entities, local parks and recreation departments, and national sports organizations to offer specialized equipment, trained instructors, and accessible facilities tailored to veterans with physical and mental health conditions.

Since the inception of the Adaptive Sports Grant Program, the VA has distributed funding to hundreds of local organizations, helping thousands of veterans transition from rehabilitation into competitive and recreational athletics.
Veterans and service members interested in participating in local adaptive sports programs, or organizations seeking information on future funding opportunities, can access resource directories through the VA’s official adaptive sports portal at www.va.gov/adaptivesports.
