VetFamily: Honoring the Legacy of Dolly Parton (1946–2026)
Music and entertainment icon Dolly Parton, a world-class musician, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist, passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer. Beyond her legendary status in the entertainment world, Parton was a devoted VetFamily member, fiercely proud of her connection to the U.S. military through her late husband, Carl Dean, and her own decades of steadfast support for service members.
Parton’s husband, Carl Dean, served in the U.S. Army just after the two met in Nashville in 1964. They kept in touch throughout his service and became engaged when his time with the Army concluded. Married on May 30, 1966, in a private ceremony, they remained together for nearly 60 years until Dean’s passing in March 2025. Although Dean famously avoided the limelight of Parton’s towering career, their bond remained a cornerstone of her life.
“We’re completely opposite, but that’s what makes it fun,” she told People Magazine in 2015. When the couple renewed their wedding vows for their 50th anniversary in 2016, Dean issued his first-ever public statement, saying, “I wouldn’t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth.”
Parton’s career was unparalleled. Shortly after her marriage in 1968, she released her first solo single, paving the way for a legacy that included 11 Grammy Awards, four People’s Choice Awards, three American Music Awards, and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame (1999) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2022). In addition to writing enduring classics like “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” she co-owned the Dollywood Company and released 49 solo albums, culminating in her acclaimed 2023 rock foray, Rockstar.
A Lifetime of Support for the Troops
Parton never missed an opportunity to express her gratitude for the armed forces. In December 2022, she spoke to troops worldwide through the USO’s Military Virtual Programming. Her patriotism was also deeply woven into her music; her 2003 album For God and Country featured a moving cover of SSGT. Barry Sadler’s 1966 classic, “Ballad of the Green Beret,” as well as original songs reflecting the sacrifices of military families.
In September 2004, the military returned that affection in a rare and distinct honor: Parton's likeness was painted as nose art on a KC-135 Stratotanker air refueling aircraft assigned to the 134th Air Refueling Wing of the Air National Guard in Knoxville, Tennessee. The aircraft was affectionately dubbed "Miss Dolly."
“I felt like those gals in World War II and I thought, ‘This is something,’ and it was a great honor and I am truly very proud of it,” Parton said at the unveiling ceremony. “I am an all-American girl and I love America, and just to be part of any of this is a great honor for me.”
Beyond her entertainment and military support, Parton's philanthropy changed millions of lives. From donating over 300 million books to children globally through her Imagination Library to providing critical early funding for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, her generosity matched her immense talent.
