Scott’s View: Coronavirus and Our World War II Veterans

Scott's View

Most of us gathered together yesterday, either remotely or in person, to celebrate Mother’s Day. It was a time to reflect on the special relationship we have with our mothers and the love, affection and gratitude we have for them. Many of us would agree with the words of President Abraham Lincoln, “All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”

The month of May is National Military Appreciation month and honors our current and former members of our Armed Forces and their families, including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom. The month includes six national observances, which highlight the contributions of those who have served, closing with Memorial Day, May 25.

This month we honor in particular the extraordinary service and sacrifice of our World War II veterans. 75 years ago, on May 8, 1945, we celebrated VE Day (Victory in Europe) bringing Allied victory over Europe, an event that marked the beginning of the end of World War II. Several months later, VJ Day was declared over Japan. Against the steepest odds, the Allies, led by the U.S. military, the world’s greatest military force, were victorious.

Let’s remember our World War II veterans today. It is a time when so many of them are leaving us from old age, with COVID-19 threatening to further shorten their lives. If you know a World War II veteran, take the time to thank them for their service AND ask them if you can help with anything to get them through these trying days.
