Scott's View: Iraq War Anniversary: 19 Years Later

Scott Higgins

March 20th will mark nineteen years since Allied forces moved into Iraq. It has popularly been called by its military mission name, Operation Iraqi Freedom, but it re-ignited a series of escalations that date back to 1990.

With a nation still in pain from the 9/11 attacks a year and half earlier, our nation’s military involvement intensified as hundreds of thousands of troops moved into the region. Our official pullout was in 2011, but history continues to draw our nation back in harm’s way, with a blast at the American Consulate in Iraq just last week. About 2,500 soldiers remain in Iraq to this day.

Let’s thank our Iraq War vets, as we honor their service and know that their sacrifice will never be in vain.
