Scott’s View: Reflecting on Dennis Quaid’s WWII dad and POW MIA Recognition Day

Scott's View

When we heard that Dennis Quaid’s band was touring in our neighborhood over the summer, we discovered a remarkable story.  Quaid has been a consistent A-list performer for decades, but first found inspiration for his career from his dad -- a WWII veteran! Read his VetFamily profile for the whole story.

This Friday, we recognize POW/MIA Recognition Day. I know for Vietnam Veterans like myself, this is an especially important day. I have returned to Vietnam twice since my service there in 1967-68. On my first trip with fellow Vietnam Vets in 1982, we were successful in lifting the ban on Amerasian children leaving the country to reunite with fathers in the United States. We also brought home some of the first remains of MIAs from Vietnam, hopefully bringing a sense of closure for the families of those fallen heroes. Thankfully, this work continues in war zones around the world, including Korea, where the remains of 55 servicemen are finally coming home from the Korean War.

As a country, we must never forget those who have served, and do everything in our power to ensure no one is left behind.
