Scott's View: Remembering Arnold Fisher, Korean War Veteran & Philanthropist: 1932-2022

Scott Higgins

Last week, we learned the sad news of the passing of a major force in the world of veterans support. Arnold Fisher, one of the key architects behind the legendary Fisher Houses that support military families world wide, passed away.

Until his passing, Fisher was Honorary Chairman of Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund foundation, and Vice Chairman to its sister organization Fisher House Foundation. He also served as chairman of the board of the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum from May 2003 through December 2006, and continued to serve as chairman emeritus until his passing.

“I am enormously proud of my father's service in Korea,” said current Fisher House Chairman Ken Fisher in an exclusive interview in 2016. “I came of age very shortly after Vietnam ended and never served, but it was those 2 wars and the way soldiers were treated that shaped my thinking. They are the forgotten veterans, who used their experience to make things better for those who serve today.”

Arnold was presented the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Clinton in 2008. He was also made an Honorary Knight of the British Empire in recognition of his contributions to the welfare and well-being of the families of British Armed Forces personnel killed in action and his work championing closer UK-US relations. He was also a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and many other honors throughout his life.
