Scott's View: Summer Olympics 2021 & Post-War Reflections on the Last Tokyo Games

Scott's View

We continue our Summer Olympics coverage today with a moving article from our own advisory board member, and two-time Olympic gold medalist Donna de Varona.

The last time the summer games were in Tokyo was in 1964, when Donna was a young champion swimmer from California. She was already an Olympian when she competed in the 1960 Rome Games at only 13 years of age, the youngest member of Team USA. At the Tokyo Games, she claimed the gold twice. Soon after, she appeared on ABC’s Wide World of Sports to become the youngest and one of the first women sportscasters for a national network.

Donna’s perspective as an athlete, broadcaster and sports advocate is  invaluable. Now, she offers her thoughts through the lens of the post-COVID world and how much Tokyo has changed since World War II. We hope you enjoy the piece and the summer games, which start one week from today!
