Scott's View: We Honor the Service of Our Vietnam Veterans on “National Vietnam War Veterans Day” 

I was pleased to see the DoD recognize my fellow Vietnam Veterans with a wreath-laying ceremony at The Vietnam War Memorial today. It sets the stage for a weekend of “Welcome Home” tributes for a generation of war veterans that never received recognition for their service and sacrifice to our country, many of whom are still dealing with the aftershocks and consequences of that war.

As many of you know, last year President Trump signed into law The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, creating “The National Vietnam War Veterans Day” to occur each year on March 29. 

I am reminded today of New York City’s Vietnam Veteran Memorial, which was dedicated in May, 1985, 10 years after the end of the Vietnam War. I served as co-chair of the Memorial Commission, together with President Trump and a dedicated ‘band of brothers’, determined to properly recognize our Vietnam brothers. We built a stunning memorial, an enormous glass wall on which are etched excerpts of letters home from Vietnam. When you’re in New York, visit the memorial at Vietnam Veterans Plaza (next to 55 Water Street downtown, off the FDR Drive on Manhattan’s East Side).

There were nine million Americans who served during that tumultuous time in our nation’s history. Let’s make sure they are never forgotten.
