The USO will honor Senator John Warner and former Representative Bob Stump with the USO’s Spirit of Hope Award at the USO Congressional Caucus Luncheon May 15 on Capitol Hill. The award is presented to members of congress who have demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting and enhancing the quality of life for service members and their families around the world.

"The men and women serving our country deserve our support, and they have been fortunate to have Senator Warner and Representative Stump advocating on their behalf," said Edward A. Powell, USO president and CEO. "Not only have these two distinguished members of congress brought honor on themselves through their unflagging support of our military, but they also have brought honor to our men and women in uniform."

Elected in 1978, Warner is now in his 25th year representing Virginia in the U.S. Senate and chairs the Armed Services Committee. Warner served in the Navy in World War II, as a Marine officer in the Korean War, and served as Secretary of the Navy during the war in Vietnam. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families and military retirees to increase military pay, restore retirement and health care benefits, and revitalize and restructure the armed forces.

Stump, a 13-term congressman from Arizona, served as a Navy medic during World War II. A member of the House Armed Services Committee, he also served on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, for three terms as its chair. During his career, he consistently supported increased military and Veterans’ spending, and pressed for increases in military pay as well as enhanced health benefits and educational assistance for Veterans. He also was a leading advocate for the construction of a World War II memorial on the National Mall.

For more than 62 years, the USO (United Service Organizations) has brought a touch of home to America’s military personnel. The USO is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit organization and is not a government agency. The USO is supported by World Partners Amazon.com, Anheuser-Busch, AT&T, BAE SYSTEMS, Clear Channel Worldwide, Coca-Cola, PricewaterhouseCoopers, S&K Sales Company, USAA Foundation, VFW and The Walt Disney Company. Other corporate donors, including Nissan, Northwest Airlines, Walgreens, and the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign (CFC-0600), have joined thousands of individual donors to support the USO.
