VA Directs $84 Million to National Effort Preventing Veteran Homelessness

The Department of Veterans Affairs is injecting $84 million into the nationwide fight against veteran homelessness, announcing a new round of grants aimed at providing critical support services. The funds will be distributed among 176 organizations across the country dedicated to helping veterans who are currently homeless or in danger of losing their housing.
The substantial investment is split into two distinct $42 million initiatives. The first half is dedicated to providing essential legal services, while the second half will fund case management programs designed to ensure veterans maintain stable, permanent housing.
"No one who served our nation in uniform should go without shelter," said VA Secretary Doug Collins. "These grants will provide crucial support and services to help thousands of veterans on their journey back to self-sufficiency.”
The legal aid, channeled through the VA’s Legal Services for Homeless Veterans and Veterans At-Risk for Homelessness Grants program, will help veterans navigate complex issues that often lead to homelessness. This includes assistance in landlord-tenant disputes to prevent eviction, representation in court for matters like child support or estate planning, and help in obtaining federal and state benefits (for those interested in knowing more about benefits available to you, check out our state benefits page). The grants will also fund legal defense for issues like outstanding warrants or fines that can be barriers to employment and housing.
Simultaneously, the case management funding will establish approximately 100 new case manager positions through the VA’s Grant and Per Diem program. These case managers will work directly with veterans, offering services such as:
- Assisting with housing searches and placement into permanent homes.
- Conducting home visits to monitor stability and provide ongoing support.
- Connecting veterans with educational activities that promote independence.
This dual approach of legal and case management support aims to not only house veterans but also to equip them with the tools and stability needed to remain housed long-term.
