The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it processed a record-breaking 3.11 million disability compensation claims in Fiscal Year 2026, marking the highest annual total in the agency's history.

The new volume milestone reflects ongoing internal modernizations aimed at accelerating decisions while maintaining consistency across the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA). According to the agency, the VBA granted more than 60% of submitted claims during the fiscal year, with only about 3% of decisions appealed to the Board of Veterans' Appeals.

Shorter Wait Times and Reduced Paperwork

Alongside the record claim volume, the VA reported widespread improvements in processing efficiency and administrative turnaround:

  • Faster Turnaround: The average time required to complete a disability claim decision dropped by 46% compared to early 2025 levels.
  • Streamlined Applications: The agency reduced required paperwork by nearly two-thirds for veterans and survivors applying for benefits.
  • Family Healthcare Backlog: The VA eliminated the existing backlog of veteran families waiting for enrollment in VA healthcare programs.

“Whether we're lowering wait times, improving healthcare, or opening new VA facilities, we will continue to put veterans first,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins, emphasizing the department’s ongoing push to modernize service delivery.

Broader Systemwide Access Gains

The claims record arrives alongside significant expansions across the VA's healthcare network throughout 2026:

  • Surging Enrollment: More than 300,000 new veterans enrolled in VA healthcare over the course of 2026.
  • New Medical Sites: The department opened 43 new health care facilities across the country to expand regional access points.
  • Extended Scheduling: To accommodate working veterans, the department conducted more than 3.4 million appointments outside of standard operating hours.

The department stated that it plans to maintain these processing and operational benchmarks into the upcoming fiscal year to keep pace with demand and ensure veterans receive timely decisions on earned benefits.
