VA Waives Life Insurance Premiums to Save Veterans Nearly $150 Million

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a three-month premium holiday for the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) program. The temporary waiver will suspend insurance payments from November 2026 through January 2027, delivering an estimated $150 million in collective financial relief to participating veterans across the country.

This initiative marks the first-ever premium holiday in the history of the self-funded VGLI program, which allows former service members to maintain term life insurance coverage after leaving military service.

Savings and Participant Breakdown

More than 457,000 veterans are currently enrolled in the VGLI program. While individual monthly rates vary based on coverage amount and age, participants pay an average of $110 per month. Under the three-month waiver, the average enrolled veteran will save approximately $330.
“VA is all about making life better and more affordable for veterans, and this premium holiday will help the men and women who served this nation keep more of their hard-earned money,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.

Automatic Exemption and Eligibility Details

To qualify for the three-month waiver, veterans must hold an active VGLI policy that has not lapsed or been canceled due to non-payment prior to the start of the holiday period.

The VA outlined the following operational details for policyholders:

  • Automatic Application: Eligible participants do not need to submit an application or take action; exemptions will apply automatically.
  • Advance Payments: Policyholders who have already paid premiums covering November 2026 through January 2027 can choose to receive a three-month statement credit or request a direct refund.
  • Program Scope: The waiver applies exclusively to VGLI and does not affect other federal life insurance programs, such as Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) or Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife).

The department will notify eligible policyholders by mail or email in the coming weeks. Detailed program information and eligibility updates remain available through the VA’s life insurance portal.
