Vet News: Vietnam Veterans: Remembering Those Who Fought In The Battle of Hue

MAYPORT, Fla., February 24, 2004 -- USS Hue City hosted more than 50 Vietnam Veterans and their families Feb. 1 for the 12th annual Battle of Hué City Memorial Service.

The ceremony paid tribute to the three understrength U.S. Marine battalions of fewer than 2,500 men, who attacked and defeated more than 10,000 enemy troops to liberate Hué for South Vietnam in the winter of 1968, making the Battle of Hué one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War.

Many Veterans of the Battle of Hué were given the opportunity to reunite for a weekend of remembrance and ceremonies to honor fallen comrades, share stories, heal wounds and be revered for gallant service to their country.

Many of the Veterans in attendance, including retired Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Heinz, remarked that after holding the ceremony in the Helicopter Hangar in 2003 due to the ship being in the dry-dock, they were glad to be able to once again commemorate the day on "their" ship.

Retired Maj. Gen. Ray Smith, who served as a Platoon and Company Commander during the Battle of Hué, paid tribute to the Marines' sacrifices as the guest speaker at this year’s Battle of Hué City Memorial service. Smith said, “The Marines who fought in the streets of Hué hold a special place in (my) heart, and they were bonded together in a unique way because of their combat experiences. The Veterans of Hué are a special breed.”

The memorial service brought remarks of courage and honor that drew deeper memories for some, tears from others, and pride from all. The ceremony concluded in fine fashion with a powerful 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps to honor those who fell at Hué. For many, it was a weekend full of pride, friendship and memories, and also a time for the Marines of Vietnam to be honored by the Sailors of Hue City.

"The General's moving speech and the camaraderie between the Vietnam Veterans greatly stirred all those in attendance," said Interior Communications Electrician (SW) Adam C. Hyskell, who has been aboard Hue City for three ceremonies. "It was a day to remember."
