TopVet: Virgil Spight /PAL to Kids

PAL Kids

Virgil L. Spight, who has more than 37 years of public service experience in law enforcement and in the military, where he served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, is the new executive director of the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL).

Spight, who has a bachelor of science degree in social science and law enforcement and a master of arts degree in criminal justice, began his career with the Detroit Police Department in 1964. During his stint as a police officer, he served as a patrol officer, community relations officer, narcotics and vice supervisor, labor relations specialist, and executive lieutenant before retiring as a commander in 1999.

Spight, who is no stranger to PAL, having served as volunteer and commanding officer from 1987 to 1993, believes that “discipline is a factor that is essential in the development of productive citizens. My goal is to strengthen the bond between police officer and youth so kids can see them as friends who want to help. Police officers can’t do this alone, so I encourage the community to join hands with us so we can help our youth."

In addition to his commitment to PAL, Spight is a member of various organizations that encourage positive youth and community bonds, including Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Northwest Optimistic Club, and the Detroit Bass Club. Among his accolades are the Police Community Service Award, the Outstanding Citizen Award, and Police Officer of the Year award.
