Honoring the 35th Anniversary of Operation Desert Storm: A Legacy of Service

Scott Higgins

This month marks the 35th anniversary of the start of Operation Desert Storm, the pivotal allied combat mission launched in 1991 to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

Originally called Operation Desert Shield before combat operations began on January 17, 1991, and often referred to as "Gulf War I," this conflict saw an unprecedented international coalition stand together to restore sovereignty in the Middle East. At the time, the world breathed a collective sigh of relief as the combat phase remained relatively brief, avoiding the protracted war many feared. For the hundreds of thousands of veterans who served during this era, it remains a defining chapter of military history marked by rapid technological advancement and decisive professional execution.

However, looking back three and a half decades later, we recognize that this was only the beginning of a long and complex chapter for our armed forces in the region. Little did we know in 1991 that over a decade later, the Middle East would again become the focus of intense conflict, placing a new generation of service members in harm’s way. From Generation X to Millenials, the baton was passed.

The continuity of service from the sands of Kuwait to the later challenges of the 21st century underscores the relentless commitment required of those in uniform. These milestones serve as a stark reminder of the enduring sacrifice made by those who maintain our global security.

As we reflect on this 35-year milestone, WeSalute remains forever grateful for the sacrifices of our Gulf War veterans and those who have followed in their footsteps. We honor their courage and dedication, holding onto the hope that their efforts were not in vain. To our Desert Storm veterans: we remember your service, we honor your achievements, and we thank you for your continued place in our community and nation’s history.
