Scott's View: Remembering September 11, 2001: Eighteen Years Later

Next week is the 18th Anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on our nation, New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. And while that’s a generation ago, 18 is more than just a number. There are those who live with the full brunt of the consequences of that terrible day 18 years ago. 

That’s also why we want to recognize the life, and death, of Luis Alvarez. While we rarely profile veterans posthumously in our editorial coverage, Luis was a Marine who lived each day since 9/11 with a solemn sense of service. He started by working at Ground Zero for three months, and in his later years, his name was synonymous with the survivors of that day. We salute his tireless efforts to revive (for the second time!) a critical funding bill to support 9/11 survivors. Ultimately, Alvarez got his dying wish -- the bill was passed, signed by the president, and now provides guaranteed coverage through the year 2092.

We’ve said this for the past 18 years, and we will repeat it next week. “Never forget.”
