Scott's View: Remembering what John McCain meant to Veterans

Scott's View

This week we honor Navy Veteran and Senator John McCain as our TopVet. We usually do not produce our awards posthumously. The last time we did it was when Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf died. But we do it when the Veteran has made an extraordinary impact on our lives as Americans and as servicemen and women.

While he was a politician who had people agree and disagree with him on both sides of the aisle, John McCain was a tireless advocate for his fellow Veterans and served his country with strength, courage and wisdom.

As he said in the introduction to the 2002 printing of “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam,” a book I helped get published 30 years ago, he said “war reveals to the service member not only his love of country, but also a new measure of himself: a calling that he must answer because he hears it so clearly and because he knows his leadership helps determine whether men live or die.”

John McCain followed his calling and for that, our nation is tremendously grateful for his service.
