VA Hospitals Receive Top Marks in National Quality Report

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on August 29th that a significant majority of its hospitals have earned high marks in the latest hospital quality ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). According to the 2025 report, more than three-fourths of VA hospitals evaluated received a four or five-star rating, with a five-star rating being the highest possible score.
The CMS ratings are a comprehensive measure of hospital quality, assessing institutions on five key metrics: mortality, safety of care, readmission rates, patient experience, and the timeliness and effectiveness of care. Notably, no VA hospital received the lowest rating of one star, and over 90% of rated VA hospitals either maintained or improved upon their 2024 scores.
“These ratings highlight the excellent care VA hospitals provide,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “Our job is to continue raising the bar for customer service and convenience throughout the department, so VA works better for the Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors we are charged with serving.”
In addition to the strong performance in the CMS ratings, the VA highlighted several other key achievements under the current administration. The department reports a more than 37% reduction in the backlog of veterans awaiting benefits, a record number of disability claims processed, and the opening of 16 new healthcare clinics nationwide to expand access to care.
The VA also cited an $800 million investment in infrastructure improvements, streamlined access to non-VA providers, and reforms to the survivor benefits process. Further initiatives include the accelerated deployment of a new electronic health record system, the recovery of $106 million in duplicate billing in partnership with CMS, and policy changes related to gender dysphoria treatments and the discontinuation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. The department has also focused on returning employees to in-office work to enhance teamwork and has successfully housed over 37,500 homeless veterans in the current fiscal year.
