VA Shatters Records for Veteran Benefits Processing

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a record-breaking year for processing disability benefits, surpassing previous marks with more than 2.5 million claims completed in fiscal year 2024. This achievement marks a significant step forward in reducing the backlog of veterans awaiting benefits.

The VA's progress has been swift, with the department completing 2,524,115 claims as of August 8, 2025, nearly two months ahead of the end of the fiscal year. This milestone follows the month of July where the VA processed over 300,000 claims, a first in the department's history. The pace of claims processing in FY25 is 17.8% faster than in the previous year, even with a 10% increase in new claims.

VA Secretary Doug Collins attributed the improvements to the current administration's focus on serving veterans. "Under President Trump, VA is making major improvements to better serve Veterans, and this announcement underscores that fact," said Secretary Collins. "We look forward to implementing more reforms to increase customer service and convenience for those we are charged with serving."

Since January 20, 2025, the backlog of veterans waiting for benefits has decreased by more than 37%. This follows a 24% increase in the backlog during the previous administration.

In addition to claims processing, the VA highlighted several other accomplishments:

  • Expanded Access to Care: The VA has opened 16 new healthcare clinics and provided nearly 1 million appointments outside of normal business hours, offering veterans more convenient options for care.
  • Infrastructure Investment: The department is investing an additional $800 million in infrastructure improvements to enhance patient care facilities.
  • External Care: The VA has made it easier and faster for veterans to access care from non-VA providers at the department's expense.
  • Electronic Health Records: The VA is accelerating the deployment of its integrated electronic health record system.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: A partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services led to the recovery of $106 million in duplicate billing.
  • Policy Changes: The VA has made it easier for survivors to get benefits and has phased out treatment for gender dysphoria, along with ending Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The department has also brought tens of thousands of employees back to in-person work.
