Scott's View: Hiring Our Heroes Jobs Fair, Helping Transitioning Veterans Start Successful Careers

I had the pleasure and honor to meet with patriotic corporations, and special military veterans, in New York City just last week as part of our nation's push to get our Post-9/11 military into the civilian workforce. Last Wednesday, Hiring Our Heroes — a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation — hosted another in its nationwide series of hiring fairs at the 69th Regiment Armory in downtown Manhattan.

Scott's View: Ellis Marsalis, Marine, and Father of Grammy Award Winners

It has been said that military service shows up in all areas of life, so as this weekend's Grammy Awards hearkens back to the history of its own greats, we should remember those who also wore the uniform. That said, we recognize Ellis Marsalis, the father of Wynton and Branford and the other talented Marsalis children, whose family has brought home more than 10 Grammys. Ellis also served in the Marines, even using his gift of music to help recruitment efforts.

Scott's View: Honoring Former Veterans Advantage Member Bill Holloman this African American History Month

We hope you enjoy reading our profile of William “Bill” Holloman, a former Veterans Advantage member. Bill passed away a few years after we originally worked with him on the piece, but his legacy is alive and well today. As one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, he helped pioneer the way for millions of African Americans who later served our nation with honor.  "We were the forerunners of the civil rights movement. We opened the door…and it has taken years for people to recognize our contribution to the war," he once said. The achievements of the Tuskegee Airmen were recently celebrated in the movie “Red Tails,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Scott's View: Last Chance For Special Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins

I just got back from our company’s annual holiday party for staff, board members and VIPs, where we distributed these fabulous commemorative coin gift sets recognizing the 150th Anniversary of the Congressional Medal of Honor, courtesy of the US Mint and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. The CMOH Foundation is co-chaired by Bruce Whitman, the CEO of Flight Safety International, and a recent Veterans Advantage TopVet, who we also honored at our event.

Scott's View: Honoring West Point's Col. Douglas Wheelock

With the last Space Shuttle mission scheduled for July 8, we want to introduce you to our TopRank, Col. Doug "Wheels" Wheelock of the US Army and NASA, the commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Expedition 25. Long-time friend Mark Sullivan introduced us to "Wheels" recently, and we're grateful he did. There's an adage that says true success comes to those who genuinely and freely share their gifts with others. Col. Wheelock embodies that adage. He is truly an inspiring individual with a deep respect for those who serve and those who need a little extra inspiration in order to serve. Enjoy!

Scott's View: We Honor Marriott's Edwin D. Fuller as a Veterans Advantage TopVet

There's a lot to be said for employee loyalty. It’s critical for success in any business enterprise. Yet, it seems less prevalent today than ever before. That's why it was so refreshing to meet with Edwin D. Fuller, President of Marriott’s International lodging business recently. A fellow Vietnam Vet, over the last 38 years, Ed has singlehandedly put his fingerprints on every Marriott hotel you've ever seen outside of the United States...and even some in the states, too!
