“Don’t let negative circumstances be an excuse for not achieving,” said Air Force Colonel Charles McGee, a Tuskegee Airman who passed away last month. The Tuskegee Airmen are a legendary group of Black soldiers and pilots in World War II who helped racial equality take off in the military. McGee was one of the oldest remaining Airmen before he died recently at the age of 102.

In a time when racism and segregation reigned, McGee and his fellow Black military personnel worked hard to prove themselves.

With the start of Black History Month, we want to share with you one of our military's most famous stories of service, the legendary Tuskegee Airmen of World War II.

In the face of great odds, they represent one of the most inspiring stories of World War II. Facing the challenges of persistent racism in the States, they found a shared passion for flight and performed with great courage, honor and success in the air battles of the European theatre. Like so many of our nation's World War II veterans, the Tuskegee Airmen are leaving us. One of their best-known, General Charles McGee, died last month at 102.
