HeroVet: Justin Constantine

Editor’s Note: Marine Lt. Colonel, attorney and WeSalute (founded as Veterans Advantage) HeroVet Justine Constantine died on May 6, after a bout with cancer. Justin was severely wounded and narrowly escaped death from a sniper’s bullet to the head in Iraq in 2006. He endured countless surgeries, and with the support of his spouse, Dahlia, recovered and became a nationally recognized author and tireless advocate for Veterans. His HeroVet profile of 2016 is republished below. It is a story of great determination and resilience that serves as inspiration for all of us. He will be greatly missed.

Marine Corps. Veteran Justin Constantine was shot in the head by sniper fire in Iraq 10 years ago. Since that day, he has turned what was once a near-death wartime experience into the opportunity to give back to others. He has just published his first book, My Battlefield, Your Office: Leadership Lessons from the Front Lines, which serves as an inspirational roadmap to guide others for success in their professional careers.

When I first learned of Justin Constantine's death, I was shocked and saddened. So many of our fallen men and women who served our nation deserve a long and satisfying life that many fellow veterans are fortunate to have today.

And yet Justin's life was so much more painful. His refusal to let a sniper's bullet dictate his destiny served as an inspiration to all of us, military personnel and civilians alike. It's sad to know that others will not be able to benefit from meeting Justin.

We had the honor of hosting and honoring Justin at our company's annual holiday party. It was a festive occasion, and Justin had us all on the edge of our seats as he accepted our HeroVet award. Six years later, cancer cut his life short, but he exemplified the Semper Fi attitude of his fellow Marines right until the end.
