I met him soon after I came home from Vietnam. A talented writer, Bernie had a natural ability to articulate the spirit of military service articulately and with a deep respect to the solemn oath we all swear to when we serve. He assisted me by writing "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam" a popular book that was cathartic in helping our nation heal after a very unpopular war.
